Kassioun Editorial 1240: The Task is Comprehensive Radical Change
“Different peoples’ experiences prove that departure of the authority does not mean departure of the regime, and that the process of changing a regime a comprehensive radical change – politically and socioeconomically – is a much more complicated process than the mere departure of a president and arrival of a new one.
The Syrian people deserve to see their struggles crowned with a true, comprehensive victory. At the core of this victory is preventing the transition from one tyrant to another, and from one plunderer to another. Therefore, as broad as the scope of current joy may be, it can also be temporary if the people do not truly move from the margins of history to its center by actually assuming power”.
The above statement is an excerpt from the statement issued by the People’s Will Party on 8 December 2024, which the past nine months have proven to be absolutely true, and that the task at hand remains one of comprehensive, radical socioeconomic and political change.
If we try to outline the major fundamental tasks facing Syria and the Syrian people, they will certainly include the following:
First: Ending the de facto partition, which has not yet been achieved. Rather, matters have slipped as a result of adopting partial security solutions and foreign interventions, which have further entrenched that partition and made overcoming it more complicated than it was on December 8.
Second: Unifying the Syrian people. This task, too, has regressed due to the adoption of the notion of “majority” and “minority”; the rise in religious, nationalist, and sectarian incitement; and the massacres and violations that have taken place in several parts of the country, bearing abhorrent sectarian dimensions.
Third: Halting the economic decline and improving people’s living conditions. Here, too, the opposite actually happened. The policies of lifting subsidies on bread, fuel, and other items continued, leading to a further deterioration in people’s living conditions. Meanwhile, the economy remained almost completely paralyzed and halted, due to the destruction of infrastructure on the one hand, and the flooding of the market with foreign products, which destroyed what remained of small and medium-sized local production.
Fourth: Ending foreign interference and achieving a Syrian-Syrian solution. What has actually happened is that foreign interference has become broader, more prominent, and more apparent, particularly destructive “Israeli” interventions, along with multiple other interventions, which have become an essential part of every activity taking place inside Syria, including dialogue and negotiation activities among Syrians themselves. In other words, the degree of internationalization has increased, not decreased.
While it is true that a pregnant woman needs nine months to give birth, as those who try to repeat the slogan “give them a chance” in innovative ways say. However, it is also true that there is a need to monitor the pregnant woman and her vital signs, otherwise the possibility of a stillborn baby is a real possibility.
Taken together, these indicators reaffirm that the primary task facing Syria and Syrians remains that of comprehensive, radical change in all its dimensions, the basic blueprint for which is UNSC Resolution 2254, including the issue of the transitional governing body, which requires defining by and consensus among Syrians. Furthermore, the General National Conference remains a fundamental requirement for bringing together and uniting Syrians and reaching consensus among them, allowing for the formation of a national unity government and a permanent constitution, leading to free and fair elections at all levels.
