Kassioun Editorial 1205: The New Popular Wave Starts Now!
The struggles of the Syrian people, after nearly 14 years of continuous suffering, have achieved the first phase of victory, and complete victory is still a new wave of struggle away. The first wave, which began in March 2011, has ended. Now the new wave begins, laden with the experiences and lessons of the first wave. We still have a long way to go to complete the victory, and the Syrian people still have struggles that must be waged.
The experiences of other countries – most notably Tunisia and Egypt – have taught us that the departure and escape of tyrants does not mean the departure of the regime, and that changing faces and hats does not mean the victory of the revolution. They have taught us that the revolutionary process of radically and comprehensively changing the regime is a complex and arduous process that requires a stubborn, conscious, organized, and continuous struggle. Otherwise, tyranny and oppression are always able to disguise themselves with new faces and new hats.
The revolutionary process is not just a passing moment in which one authority is replaced by another. Rather, it is an ongoing process, whose main weapon is the organized people who are aware of their interests and rights, and who are prepared to defend them in all arenas and at all times. Its goal is for the people to take over power in word and action, and their sovereignty over their precious and dear land, and their complete sovereignty over their resources and their labor.
In this sense, the revolution, as we have repeatedly said, is still ahead of us and not behind us. We have the right to rejoice at the opening of the horizon of hope, and at the warm rays of sunshine seeping into our tired bones after decades of darkness and deadly cold. However, we also have the right to and must ensure that our joy is armed with vigilance, wisdom, and a high readiness to struggle to complete the victory. Those who go so far in their joy as to say: “Job well-done, the mission is accomplished, go back to your homes”, are either delusional, or they do not want the Syrian people to occupy their rightful place on the stage of history.
The issue is not about the degree of trust in this or that de facto authority, but rather about the new mentality that should prevail among Syrians. We should not be bitten by the same snake twice.
The new mentality that should prevail is one far from surrendering to the “leading party”, the “unique historical leader”, and the “wise leadership”. The mentality that should prevail is that the authority and the leaders are employees of the people, who monitor them, hold them accountable, and replace them. They cannot do this unless they are an organized people who possess the tools to defend their rights, sovereignty, and dignity.
The first chapter of the revolutionary process has ended, and now a new chapter has begun, the main title of which is the push towards true political pluralism, democracy, and social justice. The gateway to all of this is the full implementation of the roadmap outlined in UNSC Resolution 2254, which is based on the right of the Syrian people to self-determination, through dialogue among Syrians, all Syrians. This means the formation of a transitional governing body and the drafting of a new constitution, followed by elections in which Syrians choose who will represent them in the administration and leadership of the new state.
The real dividing line among Syrians is still the same: the socioeconomic dividing line, where more than 90% of Syrians are impoverished, plundered producers, and they are from all ethnicities, sects, and religions, and even from all political affiliations, including the outdated ones between “loyalist” and “opposition”, and less than 10% are the corrupt, tyrannical plunderers who also belong to all ethnicities, sects, religions, and past and present political affiliations.
The social dividing line is one of the most important foundations, towards which attention must be paid in the process of struggle towards a complete revolution that changes the regime in a radical and comprehensive way for the benefit of the Syrian people, that is, for the benefit of the party of the 90%.
Thus, forward we go!
Let’s organize, organize, organize!
The broad revolutionary work has just started!
