2254 and The Golan
Arab and foreign media are broadcasting news and leaks about undeclared negotiations with the Zionist entity. Regardless of whether this news is true or not, those who are leaking them mean that, according to their narrow perceptions governed by their narrow interests, to say that a specific deal is being prepared in the dark and under the table, with specific directions that neither serve the interest of the Syrian people nor the peoples of the entire region.
Whatever the case, the issue of the occupied Syrian Golan remains at the core of the Syrian issue, with its various meanings and aspects, which requires defining a clear position on it with complete clarity, not only in the general sense of slogans, but in the tangible sense.
The first thing that should be taken into consideration, and in addition to the hidden roles that the Zionist played and is still playing in deepening the Syrian crisis, is that the Zionist entity's occupation of the Syrian Golan in 1967 is a fundamental factor in the crisis that exploded in 2011, even if this did not seem clear on the surface.
The occupation of the Golan Heights, and the existence of the Zionist entity itself as a colonial and racist project on the borders of Syria, has imposed a specific form of the Syrian state that was forced to give weight to the military and security institutions within the general structure of the state and within the political life itself, in addition to the deep economic effects associated with weak growth and development, and political effects derived from the state of emergency, which was used to suppress the political movement and narrow its margins to a minimum.
And if these phenomena had arisen spontaneously and as objective necessities starting with the occupation of Palestine and have been strengthened after 1967, then they turned into a pattern from which the ruling classes benefited to consolidate their positions and their narrow interests against the interests of all Syrians, so that the unresolved national issue became a pretext used by the enemies of the people against people’s interests, from narrowing the margin of political freedoms, to turning a blind eye to big corruption and oppression.
All this means that the occupation of the Syrian Golan, although it took place nearly half a century before the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, is a fundamental organic factor in this crisis, and it is not possible to get out of it radically and irreversibly, without a fundamental solution to this issue.
The only basis for resolving the Syrian crisis as a whole, and restoring full Syrian sovereignty over the Syrian Golan, is the full implementation of UNSC Resolution 2254, which provides for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Syrian territory, and which no one should forget that the first is the forces of the Zionist occupier, which must be removed from the Syrian land before any other forces because these Zionist occupation forces are the oldest and the most damaging ones, on the basis of this same Resolution [2254], and on the basis of previous international resolutions related to the issue, chiefly Resolutions 242 and 338.
And any political party, no matter Syrian or international, has no right to, and is absolutely impermissible to, approach this issue from any other angle... The comprehensive solution is exclusively through UNSCR 2254, and through UNSCRs 242–338, meaning: a complete withdrawal of the «Israeli» occupier from the Syrian land. This is not only a matter that can be achieved, but there is no alternative to achieving it, and in the near future.
