What is Charlie Hebdo and What is its Job?

The French magazine, Charlie Hebdo, is occupying media space that is thousands of times more than it has to contribute, mainly because of the provocative game it is playing.

As the solution to the Syrian crisis approaches, we should expect the efforts to sabotage the political process to become greater and more blatant, whether from local or international actors. These efforts are not new, but previously, it was possible for some to disguise them, at least to the ordinary observer, including a large portion of the Syrian people. Today, it is no longer possible to undermine all efforts to proceed forward with the political process without being crystal clear to the naked eye.

Ibrahim Hamidi, a journalist, citing European and Arab sources, revealed that US Special Envoy to Syria James Jeffrey and his deputy, Joel Rayburn, will soon leave their posts. Where Jeffrey will leave his post shortly and Rayburn will replace him in preparation for the latter’s departure upon completion of the formation of the new US administration. Hamidi also revealed that Jeffrey had sent several farewell messages to his European and Arab counterparts, informing them of his departure and that the US policy on Syria would not change. European officials commented that these messages are “a sign that the (US) policy continues at this stage pending the formation of the new administration.”

Potential Elections Violence on the Threshold of US Election Day

Today, 3 November 2020, is expected to witness “historical” elections in the US, and the few days leading to it are indicative thereof. Perhaps the key word in the matter is the reflection of the general world scene, including the change that the world order is undergoing, more than ever in the US.

US Elections: A Story Outside the Box

The box of ideas related to the US elections, not only the current ones, but throughout many decades, appears to be tightly locked within the limits of the competition between the two ruling parties.

A reading of the scene in the US, within the context of what can be expected of capitalism within the framework of its crisis, and also within the context of current events at the level of the socioeconomic structure, reveals a clear trend towards the deepening of chaos and escalation of conflict. It is no longer a question of “if” that will happen, but “when” will it happen and with what degree of brutality.

If a Fasiq Brings News…

The story began with the article published in Asharq Al-Awsat on October 11 entitled: “Syrian File: Moscow, Damascus Disagree Over 10 Contentious Points”. (Here is a link to the Arabic version of the article which is the main subject of this article).

Environment statistics are the least elaborate statistics in Syria. Despite the increase in wildfire frequency during the past decade, and the impact of global climate change on the increase of wildfires worldwide, Syrian data do not regularly monitor these fires or they do not make it available to everyone. Also, what is being published about the wildfires and the losses in woodland areas vary to a large extent between international and local estimates.

Disparities between the wealthy and the poor in Syria do not need statistics and proofs, as street children sleep on the ground and cry out for water in front of hotel visitors like the Four Seasons in central Damascus. Not to mention the financial elites whom we do not see, instead they gather in isolated wealthy compounds. However, numbers are necessary and more informative than sightings, and therefore, statistics of income disparities between the wealthiest and the poorest have never been included in governmental accounting and have always been within the framework of appreciation and diligence.
