Kassioun Editorial 1038: What is Behind the Western “Detour”?

The events of the past two months show a “detour” (or a “sudden turn”) in the way the West deals with the Syrian file. The West, in the political sense, though it is under American leadership, includes, in addition to Britain, France, and others, Arab countries such as Jordan, the UAE, and others.

This detour materializes in several files, including the facilitations for the “Arab” gas pipeline, as well as the matter of selective and symbolic lifting of some sanctions, in addition to an intense diplomatic movement, sometimes under economic headings and at other times under political headings.
No patriotic Syrian can deal with this Western “detour” that raises the slogan of “changing the regime’s behavior”, as a “sudden improvement in the political morals of the West”, and thus cannot put himself in the position of the fool in dealing therewith.
The general frameworks of this detour are defined by the following factors:
First: The US cannot remain on Syrian territories indefinitely, especially in light of its major battle in which it repositions its dwindling forces and resources on the world stage.
Second: For the US, the withdrawal process should be accompanied by reaping the fruits of the sabotage it has practiced for years. The key to the fruition of that withdrawal is to rearrange the region as a whole, and Syria in particular, as a key to that region, so that Washington’s opponents cannot fill the void left by its withdrawal. Furthermore, the ultimate goal is to create a new polarization in the region that places the Arab world on the opposite side of the rising international powers and their regional allies.
Third: In the Syrian context, the polarization that is required to be established in the region is the integration of the states that normalize with the Zionist in a unified position against Turkey and Iran directly, and indirectly against Russia and China.
The decisive stage that Syria is going through today is not only connected to it, but also to the whole Middle East region. We would not be exaggerating if we say that it is connected to the outcomes of the international conflict as a whole.
With regard to Syrians, restoring the unity of their country, and their unity as a people, and moving towards achieving their full economic and political independence, necessarily passes through positioning on the side that is opposite to Western-Zionist interests.
Within the current conflict, this alignment means pushing towards the unification of patriotic forces in the face of the Western and Zionist ploys, and towards the full implementation of UNSC Resolution 2254 so that Syrians will determine their own destiny.
It also means that patriotic Syrians must devise solutions to break the blockade and sanctions, and this is achievable within the new international balance. The Astana group, in addition to China, can play a decisive role in this process.
Major crises are resolved when the various factors for resolving them mature. It can now be said that the political, economic, social, and national factors have become mature to the same degree, and with the same clarity, for the first time in decades.
