“Weakening the Resolve of the Nation” Policies
The exchange rate of the dollar in the “black” market, that is, on the actual market and in the stores, rose from about 3700 Syrian pounds to the dollar at the end of last month to about 4700 on the 17th of this month, and then went back down to 3700 again, and the fluctuation continues.
What is new in this stormy turmoil are two clear things: First, reaching a new record exchange rate, which almost got to 5000 Syrian pounds to the dollar, which means – based on bitter experience – that the 5000 barrier is no longer as far or “imaginary” as it previously was.
The second thing is the new speeds: the speed of the rise, which is unprecedented, as well as the speed of the descent, as well as their speed together, i.e., their successiveness without any temporary stability period in between.
One of the direct consequences of this, apart from paralyzing whatever has remained of the economic movement during this period, is a consequence that Syrians felt directly, which is that prices rose with the stormy rise and remained where they are with the decline. This was especially felt since the decision to raise gasoline and household gas prices came in the midst of the ascent wave, and contributed to stabilizing the price increase, in addition to increasing the exchange rate of international organizations’ transfers to 2500 SYP.
In other words, the prices now are derived in one way or another from the exchange rate of 4700 Syrian pounds to the dollar, while the dollar exchange value for those who are forced to exchange it on a monthly basis and in meager numbers (especially Syrian families that live on relatives’ transfers ranging between $50 and $200 a month), it is now at the limits of 3400 Syrian pounds. That is, an additional major theft has been carried out against the general Syrian population who are already plundered and who are already standing on the threshold of hunger, slightly above or below it!
What is really worrisome is that the class of giant thieves, for whom state policies have proven time and again to be of service, have adopted this new form of “swindling” and then repeat it over and over again.
Even more worrisome, and the thing should get a lot of attention, is that the issue of profit and plundering, although essential for the giant thieves, but within the current situation of the country, with its different coordinates, it opens the door to thinking that the intention is far beyond the plundering. What is meant is precisely a sophisticated use of “the weakening of the resolve of the nation”, an expression that is a metaphor for the process of suppressing any dissenting opinion, which now seems to have an additional meaning, as a systematic process is taking place to weaken the resolve of Syrians and bring them to the utmost levels of exhaustion and fatigue. This is being carried out by the giant thieves, hand-in-hand with Western sanctions and blockade. The aim is to prepare Syrians to accept any kind of “solutions” that are suitable for warlords, and those who do not have in mind any projects except to re-divide the yields of plundering among themselves, and to keep the plundered people plundered, even if at the expense of the country’s unity.
What is also dangerous is that the warlords’ scenarios all intersect in their need for a specific environment in the regional and international sense that accepts to circumvent UNSC Resolution 2254 and opens the door to undermining the historical regional function of Syria, if not to blow it up altogether.
This is what should not be allowed under any circumstances; something that requires pushing as quickly as possible towards the solidarity among patriotic Syrian on all sides to push for the full implementation of 2254, and to benefit from the international balance, which is going contrary to the interest of the West and its followers.
