Kassioun Editorial 1276: The Syrian People Are One, and “As for the Scum, It Vanishes Worthlessly”!

There are many indicators that there is a deliberate and organized escalation of sectarian, religious, and ethnic incitement and sedition rhetoric in Syria. Most of this is happening on Facebook pages, amplified by algorithms and by external and internal cyber armies. A much smaller portion is taking place on the ground, with the aim of turning these Facebook “Wars of Dahis and al-Ghabra” into a new Syrian bloodbath.

Calls for sedition and incitement have gone so far as to attack the slogan for which Syrians shed precious blood while carrying it — “The Syrian people are one”. The slogan was even described as “the ugliest slogan”, by individuals who never left their platforms for years, remaining honored and protected, and unharmed by the collapsed former authority. Today, they are working to blow the country apart once again, without fear of accountability or oversight, or any concern for people’s blood and lives, and without any reaction from the current authorities, who bear responsibility for extinguishing sedition firmly and immediately, not fueling it.

Away from the hateful debates filling the cyber and media sphere, the real purpose behind the organized escalation of incitement, sedition, and hatred rhetoric must be understood. To understand this, we need a clear answer to the question: “Whose interest is served?” both domestically and externally.

First: Domestically

The unity of the Syrian people means unity of the 95% of Syrians who live below the poverty line and belong to all ethnicities, religions, and sects. These “95%” are the Syrian people; they are the salt of the earth and its wealth, the fortress and essence of the country — they are the country itself.

These people have started organizing themselves — like during the April 17 protest, and before and after it in several protest movements demanding rights — in order to mobilize and defend their interests against economic policies that merely repeat and continue the previous ones, even under the same labels such as “market economy”, privatization, and lifting subsidies, and even using some of the same recycled figures after getting “their status settled” and their crimes cleared.

Whoever fears the unity of the Syrian people is serving the interests of the major corrupt elites – new and old – who have been “rehabilitated”. They are also serving the interests of warlords who wish to preserve “subjects” whom they exploit and use to fight the “subjects” of other warlords. In short, anyone who stands against the unity of the Syrian people internally is either corrupt, a warlord, an associate of the corrupt or of warlords, or an agent of foreign powers, and should be held accountable on those grounds.

Second: Externally

It is obvious to any reasonable person that “Israel”, together with the Zionist current in Washington, is secretly and openly striving to pit Syrians against one another on ethnic, religious, and sectarian bases. It seeks to drown Syria once again in blood and destruction as part of its criminal so-called the “Greater Israel” project. It is accelerating these efforts in an attempt to compensate for the loss that has become certain and evident in the war with Iran.

It is also clear that various regional states — foremost among them Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Iran — are moving in the opposite direction to the Zionist trend. They are seeking rapprochement among themselves and attempting to neutralize ethnic, religious, and sectarian contradictions in order to unify their efforts against the looming Zionist threat.

In this sense, the advocates of sedition inside Syria, whether they realize it or not, are serving “Israel” and acting against the prevailing historical direction, as well as against all the regional states without cooperation and understanding with which Syria has no future.

Standing against sedition and its advocates requires strict and swift legal accountability, for which the current authorities bear primary responsibility. It also requires accelerating the preparation of the only true antidote for Syria: genuinely unifying the Syrian people in both talk and action, beginning with a real national unity government and a general national conference — public and inclusive of political and social forces — through which the Syrian people themselves determine their own destiny and interests, i.e., the interests of the 95% of impoverished and plundered Syrians.

The Syrian people are one despite sedition and its advocates, both domestic and external, and the scum of these people will vanish without effect, while what benefits humanity will endure.
