Kassioun Editorial 1245: Where is the “Agreement” They Talked About?
The last Kassioun editorial, titled “He Who Perseveres Wins... He Who Gives Up Will Be Defeated”, addressed the recent talk of a forthcoming “security agreement” with “Israel”. This talk intensified over the past week, coinciding with the UN General Assembly meetings, part of which were attended by the Syrian president. Multiple media sources, mostly Western and mostly “Israeli” in their orientation, confirmed that the agreement would be signed in New York or Washington, would include major concessions from the Syrian side, and that a Trump-sponsored meeting would be held between the “Israeli” occupation’s prime minister and the transitional Syrian president on the 29th of this month.
Despite the massive publicity campaign, the facts so far indicate that there has been no meeting, no agreement has been signed, and that there are numerous obstacles to reaching any agreement.
This stark contradiction between what has been said and is being said in the media and what is happening on the ground, especially when it comes to Syria’s future and the nature of its relationship with the “Israeli” entity, requires careful consideration of its causes and implications, and consequently the motives behind it.
Among the conclusions that can be recorded in this context are the following:
First: The media in general, and the Western media in particular, continues to do what it has always done regarding Syria: lie, lie, and lie, in order to mislead people and reshape their awareness in a way that suits the West and its interests in our region.
Second: Lying about a humiliating agreement with “Israel” is not a departure from the general context, but rather a continuation of it. It reflects an “Israeli” need to shatter Syrians’ morale, convince them that they are inevitably defeated, and push them toward despair and, consequently, surrender and acceptance of any humiliating terms imposed upon them.
Third: The failure to reach an agreement, despite all the pressure exerted toward it, including media, political, and economic pressure, is an expression of the true balance of power globally, and in our region in particular. Today, “Israel”, and the US behind it, are immeasurably weaker than they were in 2019, when the so-called Abraham Accords were signed. The key powers in the region have begun a serious and rapid repositioning; from the Saudi-Iranian reconciliation, to Turkish reconciliations with key Arab states, to the joint presence of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran, albeit at varying levels, within BRICS and Shanghai, not to mention the joint Egyptian-Turkish maneuvers, and of course the Saudi-Pakistani joint defense agreement and the Pakistani nuclear umbrella. These facts, taken together, combined with the unprecedented global popular and diplomatic progress regarding the Palestinian issue, all mean that we are facing a situation in which the norm is “Israeli” decline and defeat, not the opposite. For this very reason, the Zionists are doubling down on their political, military, and media ostentation, hoping to cover up the ongoing objective decline.
Finally: The objective American and “Israeli” retreat provides the appropriate conditions for us to fortify ourselves, prevent any concessions, and move forward over time toward the restoration of rights, most notably the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. However, they are not sufficient on their own, and will not guarantee that concessions will not be made, for which those who make them will ultimately pay the price. We say that the Western retreat alone is not sufficient, because if it is not complemented by genuine unity of Syrians, then no external circumstance, no matter how favorable, will be effective in protecting the country from slipping into further devastation, chaos, and destruction.
Fortifying Syria and Syrians through their unity means, in concrete terms, moving toward a genuine, comprehensive political solution, not a superficial one. This solution is based on the spirit of UNSC Resolution 2254 and the roadmap therein, including the formation of a transitional governing body and the drafting of a permanent constitution as one of the tasks of a General National Conference, leading to free and fair elections.
