Kassioun Editorial 1247: The Historical Meaning of Gaza’s Victory

Shortly after “Al-Aqsa Flood” Operation on 7 October 2023, and the start of the Zionist’s brutal genocidal war against the Palestinian people, Kassioun wrote in its editorial 1154 on 24 December 2023, titled “Beyond Gaza”, the following: “Perhaps the most important conclusion that can be confirmed regarding the American management of the battle is that the required battle goes far beyond the borders of the Gaza Strip and the borders of Palestine. The slogans ‘NO to expanding the war’ in parallel with ‘NO to a ceasefire’ are precisely intended to prevent a direct war between the Zionist entity and several countries in the region, in exchange for the need to expand the war in the form of comprehensive chaos that includes the entire region”.

The aforementioned editorial added: “The time frame for the American plan to detonate the entire region is not limited to weeks or months, but actually requires several years. The war on Gaza and Palestine, within this plan, is not the final goal, but rather a tool to increase the temperature and increase the contradictions in the entire region to facilitate reaching the goal: comprehensive chaos”.

Today, after two years of Zionist crimes, the war is beginning to wind down within a scene in which the Zionist entity, headed by Netanyahu — who will likely be excluded from the signing ceremony in Egypt on Monday, and in the absence of Biden under whose watch the war was ignited — is unable to achieve any of the objectives it announced throughout the war. It has neither been able to eliminate Hamas and the Palestinian Resistance or disarm them, nor was it able to recover its captives except through a prisoner exchange deal as the Resistance had decided from the get-go, nor was it able to expel the people of Gaza, nor maintain occupation of parts of it. In addition, the entity has suffered an unprecedented and immense loss on the global popular and diplomatic level, and with it the US, which supported it at every step of the genocidal war.

Going back to the quotation we began with, the greatest loss for both the American and the Zionist side is that using Gaza as a tool to raise the temperature of the region to the point of detonating the whole region within a hybrid total chaos — although it achieved some breaches here and there — has reached a dead end, and has had negative repercussions on the entire American project in the region, and it was unable to achieve its goals. The Abraham Accords, the so-called Arab NATO, and the like have effectively evaporated, replaced by a new regional reality whose defining characteristic is rapprochement and agreement among the major states in the region — from Saudi Arabia to Iran to Egypt to Turkey — and these states together are drawing closer to China and Russia, the main rivals and challengers to Western hegemony.

The historical meaning of Gaza’s victory, despite the enormous sacrifices and pains that were paid, and despite the continuing “Israeli obstinacy” thus far, is that the possibilities for American dominance throughout our region — not merely in Gaza or in Palestine — have decreased in an unprecedented way, and withdrawal from our entire region has become a more realistic possibility than ever before. Moreover, the possibility of changing the international balance of power in favor of the Americans starting from our region has largely evaporated; this will be reflected in all the new arrangements in our region, including for us in Syria, which will open up a horizon of true independence and real sovereignty if it invests the new circumstances by unifying the Syrian people in word and deed, beginning with a comprehensive political solution based on the essence of UNSC Resolution 2254, and a general national conference that becomes the primary platform to enforce the Syrian people’s right to self-determination.
