Kassioun Editorial 1226: The Era of the “Abraham Accords” is Over and Will Not Return!
Over the past week, media reports, mostly in the West, have discussed the possibility of Syrian normalization with “Israel”. This discussion has taken place within several contexts, including Trump’s visit to the Gulf states and the link between lifting US sanctions on Syria and normalization with the Zionist entity.
Merely discussing the issue is likely to provoke a significant portion of Syrians, despite all the media propaganda to the contrary. This is especially true given that the “Israel” being discussed, and with which peace or normalization is being negotiated, is the same “Israel” that is bombing Syria almost daily, occupying portions of its territory, calling for its partition, fragmentation, and the end of it as a geopolitical entity, and inciting its people against one another in a sectarian slaughter that will leave no stone unturned. Nevertheless, it is imperative to discuss the matter objectively, based on the national interests of the Syrian people.
Although there are no official Syrian confirmations in this regard, we must first and foremost establish that making a decision on the level of waging war or moving toward peace, especially with a historical enemy and occupier of part of Syrian territory, “Israel”, is the exclusive prerogative of an authority elected in a free and fair popular election. The current authority does not meet this condition, and therefore does not have the authority to make any agreement of this level and with such effect.
In addition to this essential issue, the following points can be established:
First: The era of the “Abraham Accords” and the “Arab NATO” myth has passed, irregrettably and irrevocably. The West Asia/Middle East region in which we live is indeed being reshaped, but not according to the fragmenting “Israeli” formula. Quite the opposite. The formula being implemented is one of rapprochement, cooperation, and consensus among the major regional powers: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, and Egypt, with the relentless and continuous support of China and Russia. This will lead to genuine stability in the region, allowing the Belt and Road projects and the Eurasian project to flourish, and for the countries of the region as a whole to flourish alongside them. This will be in a historical direction opposite to the one imposed on it since the Sykes-Picot Agreements, which were complemented by the implantation of the Zionist entity in our region.
Second: The initiative practically launched by Abdullah Öcalan, Devlet Bahçeli, and Erdoğan to resolve the Kurdish issue in Turkey, which has been making measured progress over the past few weeks and days, represents an important indicator of the actual direction of progress that is contrary to the Sykes-Picot/“Israel” formula, which has been one of the basis for keeping our region inflamed, weak, and a stage for bloodshed and Western foreign intervention for a century.
Third: The tangible facts regarding the US negotiations with Iran, the truce with the Houthis, the pressure to end the war on Gaza, the US openness to major deals with Saudi Arabia, including peaceful nuclear deals, without the condition of normalization with “Israel”, and the beginning of the US withdrawal from Syria, all indicate that the real coordinates are completely opposite to the destructive “Israeli” direction. The also prove that the weight of the Zionist entity in the various equations of the region is continuing to decline and retreat, despite all the arrogance and haughtiness with which it tries to portray itself.
The interests of Syria and the Syrians require a definitive end to any illusions regarding good relations with the West that would lead to the lifting of sanctions, especially through “Israel”. It also requires working on two indispensable issues: unifying Syrians through a general national conference and a national unity government, and bypassing the sanctions through a system of regional and international relations that is not subject to political and national extortion. These are two achievable matters, and not one option among many, but rather a single, mandatory direction if we want to preserve a united Syria, both in terms of land and people.
