Kassioun Editorial 1185: The New World Will be Shaped in the East... Including Syria!
The recent non-paper on Syria that a group of European countries launched, as well as the appointment of an Italian ambassador to Syria after a long hiatus, have sparked a series of reactions.
As is usual in the media affiliated with extremists on both Syrian sides, there was almost complete agreement in reading and interpreting these developments, even though this was accompanied by joyous chants on one side, and slapping and wailing on the other side.
The extremists agreed on that these developments being a continuation of the process of “normalization with the regime”, which could ultimately return Syria to pre-2011.
The truth, we believe, lies somewhere else entirely, revealed by key words within the above-referenced non-paper itself. The non-paper, which speaks of a new policy towards Syria, reveals its goal in the following words: “Increase our political leverage [in Syria]”.
These keywords implicitly reveal the reality of the decline of European and Western influence in general in Syria. These “new positions” in this sense are an attempt to enter through the window after the door has been closed.
The window through which the Western powers want to enter is that of “changing the regime’s behavior” and through “step for step”. The essence of this process is an attempt to undermine UNSC Resolution 2254, and to deepen and prolong the crisis and fixing the de facto division. Moreover, the timing reveals a frantic Western effort to try to block the path to the Syrian-Turkish settlement, and to Astana’s work toward a political solution and toward implementing UNSC Resolution 2254, by trying to create a balance whose goal is to zero out the outcome and keep the current reality as it is, allowing it to deteriorate further.
Despite these attempts, facts are stubborn, and cosmetics do not work with them. Western influence, not only in Syria, but in the entire world, is in rapid and continuous decline, and on all levels: economic, political, military, cultural, and spiritual.
On the other hand, within the ongoing conflict globally and in our region, the process of shaping the new world is taking place precisely at the hands of the rising powers, at the hands of the East. The Syrian patriotic forces that still have illusions about the weight of the West and its ability to decide the fate of our country or seriously influence this fate, must get rid of these illusions as quickly as possible, because they are harmful and deadly.
The solution in Syria will not be Western in any way, but rather Eastern, by Syrian hands and with Syrian will, and through understanding and cooperation among the Astana Group, China, and a group of key Arab countries, most notably Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Likewise, the solution will be through “Only 2254 and Nothing Else… In Its Entirety and Now!” and will not be through “step for step” or “changing the regime’s behavior”. Not to mention a “new European policy”, which is in fact a continuation of the old policy but in a more clear and open phase, and with an American mandate in the end, with the aim of prolonging and deepening the crisis.
