What is Pompeo’s Objective by Desecrating the Syrian Golan?

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that he will visit the occupied Syrian Golan Heights today, Thursday, November 19, during his visit to the Zionist entity.

It is probably not difficult to explain Pompeo’s – who likely will not continue in office after 20 January 2021, when the new administration takes over – objectives from his visit to the Zionist entity at this time, nor from announcing a tour he will undertake in the occupied Syrian Golan. This comes in parallel with the announcement of the US moving towards classifying the BDS movement as an anti-Semitic movement, which means prohibiting and restricting its activities. Furthermore, as part of his visit, Pompeo will pass through several Zionist settlements, becoming the first US official of this level to officially visit Zionist settlements.

We can summarize the expected objectives as follows:

First: In continuation of the internal US clash, flirting the American Zionists and those around them was an essential part of the election campaigns of both Trump and Biden alike. Taking these steps at this time, including the tour in the occupied Golan and visiting settlements, in addition to statements he made in his press conference with Netanyahu on the settlement issue, is nothing but an extension of the internal US conflict itself, and an attempt to strengthen Trump’s cards therein.

Second: Beyond that, and regardless of the internal US clash, Biden will not retreat from the steps taken by Trump with regard to normalization, which also means that the current administration is moving forward with carrying the burden of these intensive steps off the plate of the next administration, and during stoppage time.

Third: Additionally, the internal crisis that the Zionist entity is experiencing, with its multiple economic, social, and political dimensions, which has been exemplified over the last few years by the instability of any of the governments, and the announcement of a new round of elections after a few months, also play a role in explaining this visit. Meaning, Netanyahu and his camp need to demonstrate the “achievements” he has accomplished to divert attention from the escalating crisis and to strengthen his cards within it.

Fourth: The visit also reflects the continued approach of the American elite towards the Palestinian cause, which is based on continuously working to obliterate it permanently, especially since the recently-signed Cairo agreement between Fatah and Hamas bears signs contradicting the general inclination the US wants. While the divisions are becoming greater on the Zionist side, the possibilities for rapprochement and understanding increase on the Palestinian side.

Fifth: Allocating a visit to the occupied Syrian Golan also carries a clear indication of the US view of the Syrian issue. It is a traditional colonial view hostile to the Syrian people, their rights, and their country’s unity, which is another blow to the shameless parties and persons who continue to declare their approval of US sanctions and go further by calling the US an ally of Syria. Moreover, the visit draws in bold lines the American-Zionist vision that is being presented behind the scenes and under the table regarding the future of the conflict between Syria and the occupying entity. This also would serve a blow to those working under the tables and their attempts to turn the Golan into a real estate issue by separating it from the Palestinian cause.
