If a Fasiq Brings News…

The story began with the article published in Asharq Al-Awsat on October 11 entitled: “Syrian File: Moscow, Damascus Disagree Over 10 Contentious Points”. (Here is a link to the Arabic version of the article which is the main subject of this article).

In the aforementioned article, the author attributes to Lavrov as saying during an interview with Al-Arabiya TV on September 21: “The second contentious point is the eastern side of the Euphrates, where the Americans are illegally present with the separatist forces, and are toying with the Kurds in an irresponsible way.” We wrote “the separatist forces” in bold, because it is a distortion of what Lavrov said.

What Lavrov said exactly during the interview, which he did in English and which was published on Al-Arabiya website and YouTube channel at 15:30, is the following: “The second hotbed is the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, where the illegal presence of the American troops, combined with the Americans promoting separatist trends, playing with the Kurdish Guards in a very reckless manner, I would say”. This text can be also found on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.

There is a huge difference between the original statement and the distorted one. The criticism in the original statement is focused on the behavior of the US in particular, while after the distortion it becomes focused on SDC and the Autonomous Administration.

Based on this difference and this distortion, many forces hostile to the political solution from different backgrounds have attempted to create a state of hostility between Moscow and SDC, and in a clear effort to reduce the impact and effect of the memorandum of understanding signed between SDC and the People’s Will Party in Moscow at the end of last August.

The most dangerous issue is the incomprehensible slipping and falling of some of the supporters of those keen on reaching the political solution into the distortion trap and taking political positions based on it.

Not an Error

Before embarking on a reading of the additional dimensions of the issue, it is necessary to elaborate on analyzing the distortion by denying the possibility that it is merely an error. It is very striking that the English version of the article, does not have in it the distorted statement, which only appeared in the Arabic version. This may reflect disregard and lack of respect for the Arab reader, whereas “professionalism” did not allow permit for the distortion to appear in the English text, while allowed it in the Arabic text.

Targeting

It is no secret that the extremists from the different Syrian sides, based on various pretexts, are not satisfied with describing SDC with ease as a separatist, including all dimensions of that description, but also they call for its annihilation, ending it, in war or peace, in a curious repetition of the extremist slogans that Syrians have paid for a very high price with many lives.

Beyond that, these extremists, as well as the country that most intersects with them in interests, that is the US, are seeking together and colluding, in an attempt to prolong the life of the “Syrian quagmire” and postpone the political solution as much as possible.

Consequently, it is not strange (and as an example only) to see the US, which claims “its support for the Kurds”, receiving with a full reception, with all kinds of meaningless figures and entities that openly seek to make larger the flames of Arab-Kurdish discord in the Syrian northeast.

The issue in essence is that the extremists and the Americans agree on the necessity to isolate the northeast from the political process, and the need to ignite discord in the Syrian northeast, because the two issues serve achieving non-implementation of the political solution. Furthermore, the two issues even reopen the possibilities for dividing Syria, and this isolation process necessarily requires tense or even bad relations between Moscow and SDC, and between SDC and the Syrian patriotic forces.

There is a verse in Quran, which says: “O ye believers, if a fasiq (an immoral person) comes to you with news, beware that you strike people in ignorance, and you will regret what you have done.”
