Moscow Platform letter to Mr. Pedersen on ammendments to UNSCR 2254
A letter to Mr. Gire Pedersen
Your Excellency, Mr. Geir Pedersen
The United Nation’s Special Envoy to Syria,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Moscow Platform for the Syrian Opposition, to share with you a proposal that I believe is an absolute necessity at the current stage of the Syrian crisis, in order to preserve Syria’s unity and territorial integrity and protect it from multiple dangerous possibilities, including the resumption of infighting and the deepening of negative foreign interventions.
Since your mandate is based on UNSC Resolution 2254, and since one of the parties stipulated in said resolution is the Syrian regime/government, which no longer exists in practice, there is a need to introduce some amendments to the text of the resolution and adopt them in the UN Security Council. We attach to this letter an annex with the proposed amendments.
UNSC Resolution 2254 in essence remains valid in its entirety as a roadmap for the solution in Syria, because it is based on the right of the Syrian people to self-determination through a Syrian-Syrian dialogue, that is Syrian-led Syrian-owned, allowing the participation of all Syrians and ensuring the social and political consensus necessary for stability and preservation of the unity of Syria and the Syrian people. This includes the continued support and assistance of the United Nations to all Syrian forces in reaching a new constitution and the transfer of all UN activities to Damascus instead of Geneva.
We count on your positive role and good offices at this sensitive stage in the history of the Syrian people and the history of our region as a whole.
Dr. Kadri Jamil
Head of the Moscow Platform for the Syrian Opposition
